Does your website pass the ‘no scroll ten second test’?
Here’s how to find out.
Type your website link into your internet browser on your phone.
Put your phone down (so you can’t scroll!) and start the clock.
Before ten seconds has elapsed, your website should have fully loaded, and you should know everything you need to know about your business.
And you shouldn’t have to scroll – even on a mobile device.
In the first ten seconds, your potential clients should be able to find out:
- Your business name
- Your unique selling proposition (USP) – what you do best and for whom (including a happy, smiling photo of the sort of person you’re looking to attract)
- Your location (if you’re brick-and-mortar)
- A summary of how your business works (the services you provide)
- A clear call to action (CTA), ideally a form or button leading to the next step
These are the things I ensure are ‘front and centre’ in every website I build.

In the early days of newspapers, the paper was folded in half on the newsstand. Pedestrians walking past would glance at the visible part of the paper to see if it was worth buying. This above the fold section was the most important part of the paper when trying to make a sale.
With websites, the above the fold section is just as important. When someone opens your website on their computer, phone or tablet, the information they see before scrolling is key.
So does your website pass the ‘no scroll ten second test’?
If not, make some changes and prepare for an increase in website enquiries.
